Christiansburg Grandchildren's Retreat: Transforming an Unfinished Attic Above-Garage into a Family Haven

Project: Grandparents’ Above-Garage Build

Project Goals:

  • Make the unused attic above the garage into a cozy, functional family room.

  • Provide a warm, welcoming space for grandchildren visits.

  • Optimize storage using smart built-in solutions.

  • Create a dedicated crafting workspace tailored for the husband’s hobbies.

Project Overview

This space started as a completely unfinished attic above the garage—uninsulated, dimly lit, and inaccessible. The homeowners, doting grandparents, wanted a comfortable family room where their grandchildren could play, read, and relax. They also needed thoughtful storage solutions to maintain tidiness, as well as a customized crafting area for the husband’s creative pursuits.

The homeowners were actively involved in the planning phase, streamlining material choices and layout decisions. Construction proceeded smoothly, and the space was completed right on schedule—ready for the grandchildren’s summer visits and family bonding. A few finishing touches—final lighting adjustments and staging—wrapped up shortly thereafter.

Scope of Work

To transform the space, our team tackled the project in phases:

  • Access & Structure
Added a sturdy staircase to improve safety and convenience when moving between levels.

  • Finishes & Flooring
Framed and insulated all walls, installed drywall, and fitted rich hardwood flooring to add warmth and durability.

  • Storage Solutions
Customized closets under the sloped eaves to make the most of every inch of space—ideal for storing toys, linens, and seasonal items.

  • Crafting Workspace
Designed a built-in desk and shelving tailored to the husband’s crafting needs: ample work surface, integrated storage for supplies, and thoughtful lighting to foster creativity.

  • Lighting & Ambience
Installed layered lighting—general ceiling fixtures, task lighting over the crafting area, and warm recessed lights to create a bright, welcoming atmosphere.

Design Highlights

  • Maximizing Unused Space: The awkward eaves became functional storage instead of wasted space.

  • Warm & Inviting Aesthetic: Hardwood flooring, soft neutral tones, and natural light give the room a cozy, homey feel.

  • Family-First Functionality: From playtime to creative hobbies, every detail was designed with family use in mind.

  • Personal Touch: The crafting nook elevates the room from a generic bonus space to a personalized, purposeful retreat.

Final Thoughts

This Christiansburg above-garage attic didn't just gain walls and floors—it gained purpose. What was once an inaccessible, underutilized space now brims with warmth, functionality, and joy. It’s a place where grandparents can watch grandchildren build forts, where crafts come to life, and where memories are made. Through thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship, this project beautifully marries practicality with heart.
