Preston Forest Kitchen Renovation: From Dark & Outdated to Bright, Inviting, and Functional

Project: Full Kitchen Remodel, Preston Forest, Blacksburg

Project Goals

  • Open up and modernize an outdated, dark kitchen

  • Create a warm, welcoming hub that connects seamlessly to the adjoining den

  • Incorporate features that make the space functional for everyday living and entertaining

  • Select finishes that brighten and visually expand the room while adding warmth

Project Overview

Our latest project took place in the Preston Forest neighborhood of Blacksburg, where a pair of empty nesters had just moved into their new home. With the owner working from home, the kitchen needed to be more than just beautiful — it had to be functional, comfortable, and a joy to use every day.

The homeowners also love to entertain, and since the kitchen flows directly into the main living area, they wanted it to become a focal point for gatherings with family and friends. The original kitchen, however, was dark, cramped, and outdated — hardly the inviting heart of the home they envisioned.

With a complete remodel, we opened up the space, upgraded finishes, and created a kitchen that’s now bright, modern, and perfectly suited for both workday routines and evening entertaining.

Scope of Work

  1. Demolition & Opening the Space
We removed outdated cabinetry, countertops, and appliances, and opened up the space to improve the connection between the kitchen and den.

  2. Infrastructure Upgrades
Electrical and plumbing systems were updated to handle modern appliances and enhanced lighting.

  3. Cabinetry & Shelving
Custom cabinetry was installed along with open shelving to keep the room light and airy, providing both display space and practical storage.

  4. Appliance Integration
The remodel includes a warming drawer and a built-in wall oven with microwave/convection combo, adding both convenience and a sleek, modern look.

  5. Finishes & Surfaces

    • Quartz countertops with a stunning warm golden streak became the visual centerpiece of the kitchen.

    • Light flooring was added to reflect light, unify the design with the living area, and make the entire space feel more expansive.

  6. Lighting & Details
Layered lighting, including recessed, pendant, and under-cabinet fixtures, ensures the kitchen works equally well for food prep, entertaining, and day-to-day living.

Design Highlights

  • Bright & Open Feel
By opening the kitchen to the den, the space is no longer isolated but part of the natural flow of daily life.

  • Showpiece Countertops
The gold-veined quartz brings warmth and sophistication, tying together the cabinetry and flooring with a timeless elegance.

  • Modern Conveniences
The addition of high-end appliances, including the wall oven and warming drawer, makes the kitchen a true workhorse while still maintaining a streamlined appearance.

  • Entertaining-Ready
With its open sight lines and inviting finishes, the kitchen is now an ideal setting for hosting friends and family — something these new Blacksburg residents are especially excited about.

Final Thoughts

This Preston Forest kitchen renovation in Blacksburg wasn’t just about replacing outdated finishes — it was about giving the homeowners a space that fits their lifestyle. Now they have a kitchen that’s functional for everyday work and cooking, comfortable for spending time together, and inviting enough to share with friends and family.

If you’re ready to transform your kitchen into the heart of your home, we’d love to help bring your vision to life.
